Unity in Diversity
The time has come!
On the 17th of May Tilburg Model United Nations organises a one day conference that is open to all the students of Tilburg University. We will represent the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on how to improve the situation of LGBT people in states where being LGBT is illegal. During the conference we will debate about the situation of LGBT people around the world from the perspectives of different countries. The goal of the conference is to write a resolution tackling the problem but with enough support from all the countries.
The conference will be tailored towards more inexperienced MUN debaters so that everyone can join. A week before the conference every participant will get a brochure with more information about the topic. Also every delegation will be assigned a country that they have to represent. Before the conference it is advised that every delegate writes a position paper explaining the position that their country has on the topic.
You are welcome from 12:30 and the conference will last until 17:30. The exact location of the conference will be announced shortly. After the debate we will have dinner at Esplanade, and in the evening we will host a pubquiz which will end around 21:00. Costs for participating are 20,- the costs include the conference with catering, the dinner and the pubquiz. Drinks in Esplanade have to be paid for by the participants themselves.
The UNHCR
The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) was created in 2006 in order to replace the Commission on Human Rights. The UNHRC is made up of 47 United Nations member States, which are elected by the General Assembly. Each State is elec ted for a three years term. The UNHRC is responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the world. But also discusses different thematic issues that require attention such as the situation of human rights of Myanmar, Spain or Syria by their respective annual monitoring situation.
The case
The rights of LGBT community are not respected in many countries around the world despite efforts by multiple international organisations. It is almost impossible to express LGBT sympathy in countries like Brunei or Russia, but also in some European countries LGBT rights are being infringed upon. It is impossible for the UNHCR to directly change the LGBT laws in countries because the sovereignty of states is extremely important in international law. During the conference we will try to find solutions to this problem. Taking into account that not every country will agree that there is a problem let alone agree to the solutions that are being proposed. Using speeches and diplomacy the delegations will have to try to forge a resolution with enough support to be accepted and enacted by the UNHCR.
