From our opening event onwards we have enjoyed all the great experiences we have had. The different workshops, delegations, activities such as the election night, trips to Brussels and The Hague and of course our flagship conference were all met with great enthusiasm and spirit.
As a board, we are especially proud of the conference that was organised in February. After months of planning and hours and hours of meetings, we managed to create a three day event for more than 100 people from around the world. An experience that we shall never forget.
Even with all our successes and unforgettable experiences, we did not forget to sit down and look back on the past year with a critical eye, to determine what went well and what can be improved for the upcoming academic year. Hence, we have a clear plan of action on how to improve Tilburg MUN even further. Specifically our delegations, workshops and the social events, in order to make sure that we become the best association of its kind and provide our members with an even more educational, fun and above all unforgettable year.
Once again we would like to thank everyone who has made this year so special; from our members to everyone we worked with in the university, such as the Academic Forum and Tilburg University College. Also, special thanks to the municipality for supporting our association. We hope you have all enjoyed this experience as much as we did and that we will see you all again in September.
Have a great holiday and see you in September!
This year we were very fortunate to have such an energetic, versatile and hard working team, but everything comes to an end. So even though we have not finished the year yet it is time to look ahead, because we have got some very interesting vacancies for next year!
If you think you can handle this challenge and you are aware that being a board member takes quite some time and responsibility, you can apply! To do this please send an email with your CV and motivation letter (max 1 page) to email@example.com no later than May 15th, 12pm.
On Tuesday two of our board members gave a lecture to all students in the first year of Liberal Arts & Sciences about our upcoming mini-conference next month. During this lecture they learned more about the basics of MUN, how to step in the shoes of a delegate and some handy tips & tricks to improve a political speech.
After this we did not even wait 24 hours for our next event: Election Night.
On Tuesday night a group of members came together to follow the American elections. From 11pm until about 9am we had discussions, debates and most importantly, followed every step of the way. Unfortunately for most participants the results of the night did not work out the way they hoped for, but that did not stop us from having a great night!
When everyone had gotten rid of the biggest shock of the American elections it was time for this week’s trip to The Hague. On Friday the group first visited Humanity House where our members got a true ‘refugee experience’. After a quick lunch we then traveled to the highlight of the day; The International Criminal Court. In the court everyone first got a quick introduction on the work of the court and the current cases, after this we had the opportunity to witness the case of Bosco Ntaganda.
Mister Ntaganda is the alleged Deputy Chief of Staff and commander of operations of the Union des Patriotes Congolais/Forces Patriotiques pour la Libération du Congo (UPC/FPLC), an organized armed group involved in two conflicts in 2002 and 2003. He has been accused of 13 counts of war crimes and 5 counts of crimes against humanity.
After this impressive visit to the ICC we went back to the city center to tour some political highlights of the city. After a walk past the king’s palace and the parliament we moved inside for some Italian food.
As you can see Tilburg MUN had a busy week this week, but don’t worry if you missed out on any of the activities. We are already planning more workshops (such as the one on the 16th of November), trips and delegations.
During our workshops we will, for example, help you to master the skills of public speaking, debating and negotiating. With these skills you will be well prepared for the Model United Nations conferences The Society will be attending, but it will also help you in your professional and social life.
During the next few months we will host fortnightly workshops – the first of which takes place this Wednesday. We will start with a short introduction into MUN, after which we will let you do the rest of the work by putting your knowledge into practice. This is because we believe that practicing yourself is much more important and helpful than just listening to us. So if you feel like improving these vital soft skills we would like to invite you to our first workshop on Wednesday 5th of October at 6:30PM in W203. See you then!
By clicking on that button, you will find out that our conference in Tilburg will be held from the 3rd until the 5th of February 2017. Yes, you are reading that correctly, for the first time in our history we will organize a three-day conference. But that’s not all, this year’s conference will also have a very exciting theme, a new committee and a crisis session! All in all we truly believe that this one will be a special one, so we invite you all over to that part of the website and hope to see you on the 3rd of February 2017.
To make the 2016-2017 year a special one, we have decided that MUN in Tilburg will undergo a major makeover. The new website, updated facebook page and logo are only minor changes that help create a renewed brand, a new image. We aim to not only uphold the tradition of training sessions, delegations and our grand conference but we have also decided to introduce more trainings throughout the year, several more (social) events, a general members meeting and many more! Perhaps the biggest news of all is that we are now an independent association with its own members!
We are introducing this membership system because we believe that it is the members that make up an association. But, don’t be fooled - we are not just calling this an association with members. As Tilburg Model United Nations we will have a Society, of which you can be a part of! For a yearly fee of just 15 euros you will enjoy a range of benefits. These will include access to all our trainings, social events, delegations and our own flagship conference and much more. We believe we have said enough now, don’t wait and become part of our Society!
Kind regards and we look forward to meeting you,
The Tilburg Model United Nations Board
